Hi all,
I heard just yesterday that Winamp is being shut down. What I'm wondering is what other kinds of media players do you guys use. I know about iTunes, but I just want your opinion about other media players. I have a laptop running windows 7 and jaws 12. thanks,
Leslie
You could use VLC, that's a good media player that plays just about anything. And there's always Windows Media Player, which ships with Windows.
I like Windows Media Player, and Real Player. Both accessible.
Last I looked, Real Player wasn't that accessible. Windows Media Player keeps losing track of my music, so therefore it's a bit of a bad option as far as I'm concerned.
Real player doesn't play all media types and it's just old hat.
I don't have any problems with Media player loosing my music at all. The music even gets in the cataglory I select or move it to. It also remains in my music folder and can be played from there, so I'm not sure what you mean?
Real Player isn't the best, but good.
I tried VLC media player but I found that none of the shortcut keys seemed to work, and the menus were a pain to navigate. I also couldn't figure out how to do really basic things like shuffle the music. The only reason I like it at all is because it will announce the track you're listening to in the title bar. I have a huge music library, so when an unfamiliar song comes on I like to know what it is. WMP doesn't give me that. iTunes does, but I dislike iTunes for so many reasons that it would be a board topic in itself.
Just because the company is shutting down doesn't mean that it'll stop functioning. You'll just not receive updates.
If you look around there are lots of places that store installers for programs that are no longer made or developed. It's just that no new developments will happen with Winamp. I say if you like it, grab an installer and store it on a Flash drive or SD card where you can get at it. Go play with Foobar or VLC if you want, although I personally don't know much about those players. I think Windows Media Player's interface is a bit cluttered, and I abandoned Realplayer long ago and if there's any of their content out there I use something called Real Alternative to handle it. I mostly use Winamp to play playlists of audio streams I like so I'm not sure which other player handles those best. But yeah, Winamp is not going to erase itself from my drive when the site shuts down.
Yes, a great idea to save an installer or program in case you get a new computer or something.
And with a media player in particular, you're pretty safe using an older one. It's not like next year mp3 files will become expired or outdated or anything.
are you guys sure that Winamp is shutting down? look at what people posted about skype on the boards in an earlier thread.
Wasn't people, it was me. I read it and others read it, but Microsoft says no.
I am now trying to learn why the message was showing. Some of it will be fazed out, but not the desktop version completely, so I'm wondering if Skype had some sort of virus attached Microsoft hasn't talked about?
I never saw the message until I updated.
I was under the impression that what happened with Skype was a misunderstanding: the API was shutting down, but not the application itself. People heard, misunderstood, and ran with it.
I'm certainly keeping winamp. Never found a better player.
me too, winamp all the way, for my mp3s at least. I had bin using it ever since I started using computer way back in year 2002.come to think of it, winamp is one of the first software I learn right after learning jaws.
and for my other media files I use VLC and gom media player. sorry, although I'm using apple prodocts I have no love for iTunes.
i still use windos live messenger, so would continue to use winamp.
i stil use CDEX even though it hasn't been updated in 4 years.
Thanks all for the help. I mainly use winamp for streaming radio stations. It's a good thing I can still use it after it shuts down. With that being said, I'm gonna keep winamp. thanks again for the help and suggestions,
Leslie
Same here. I especially like the fact that you can add compression plugins and turn them on when a track or a radio station is too quiet.
Wasn't it also the first program to do broadcasting for Internet radio? Winamp, that is.
I'm definitely not getting rid of Winamp, either. And no, this isn't a misunderstanding. There's a petition to AOL to try and get them to make Winamp open source, but I'm not sure how much good it will do.
If the person that created it lets the rights to the probram go, someone will pick it up. It could be a family issue, or something.
Maybe the person wishes to retire or something.
I don't use it, but have and like it fine.
Might I enquire as to why Winamp will no longer be produced?
